Modern laminate is a long way from the click-together boards of twenty years ago. The best ranges are genuinely waterproof, carry a bevelled edge that reads like real timber, and come with wear ratings (AC4, AC5) that tell you honestly how much traffic they will take. Herringbone and chevron laminate now give you the pattern of a parquet floor at a fraction of the cost of real wood. If you are weighing laminate against engineered wood or LVT, order samples of all three and compare them in the room they are going in.

Stone and tile looks for kitchens and utilities, warmer underfoot than the real thing.
Angled blocks meeting in a point. Sharper and more contemporary than herringbone.
A groove between boards that reads as individual planks rather than a sheet.
Then the practical question: where is it going, and what will it have to put up with?
Sealed construction. The reason laminate is now viable in a kitchen or bathroom.
Underlay bonded to the board. Faster to fit and one less thing to buy.
Thicker board, more solid underfoot, quieter. Worth it on a suspended floor.
The value thickness. Fine for bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms.
Waterproof laminate changed what is possible here. A sealed board copes with spills that would ruin real wood.

Sealed construction that will take standing water for hours rather than minutes.
These two get compared more than any other pair of floors, and most comparisons online are written by someone who only sells one of them. We sell both, so here is the straight version. Laminate has a photographic layer under a hard wear surface. It is harder, more scratch-resistant and usually cheaper per square metre, and modern waterproof ranges handle a kitchen without complaint.
LVT is vinyl through and through. It is softer and warmer underfoot, quieter, completely waterproof by nature rather than by construction, and it will take a curved or patterned layout that laminate cannot. If the room is a bathroom or a wet room, choose LVT. If it is a busy hallway with a dog and a bike, laminate will probably wear better. Order both as samples.
