Engineered wood gives you a real timber wear layer over a stable plywood core, so it copes with underfloor heating and with the humidity swings of a British kitchen. Solid wood is a single piece of timber throughout and can be sanded back many times over its life. Whichever you choose, the grade (prime or rustic), the thickness of the wear layer and the board width will do more for the finished look than the species alone. Real timber wear layer over a stable core. Works with underfloor heating.
One piece of timber. Sands back many times. Best in stable, dry rooms.
Blocks laid in a V pattern. Engineered construction, pattern-led look.
Then the look: species sets the tone, grade sets how much knot and character you get.
The default for a reason. Takes any finish, ages well, easy to match later.
Paler and straighter-grained than oak. Good in a room short on light.
Minimal knots and colour variation. Calm, uniform, contemporary.
Knots, sap and colour movement. Character-led and more forgiving.
The room real wood was made for. Wide boards and a natural oil finish will do more here than any other choice.
Shop Living RoomThickness tells you how much real timber sits on top, and therefore how many times the floor can be sanded back. Width changes how big the room reads.
Engineered. The lowest build-up, so it fits under doors without trimming. Good over underfloor heating.
The everyday engineered thickness. Solid underfoot with a wear layer that will take two or three sandings.
Thick wear layer, closest feel to solid wood, longest life if you plan to refinish.
Wider boards mean fewer joins and a calmer floor. Best in larger, well-lit rooms.
This is the finish decision, and it changes how the floor looks, how it feels and how you look after it. A lacquered floor has a sealed film on the surface. It resists spills and scuffs, needs nothing more than sweeping and a damp mop, and is the sensible choice for a family hallway or a kitchen.
An oiled floor has oil worked into the timber itself. It looks and feels more like raw wood, the grain stays open, and small marks can be spot-repaired rather than needing the whole floor sanding. It does need re-oiling every so often. If you want the floor to look like wood rather than like a finish, oil is the answer.
